Higher Weaning Weights Make The Difference Extra Pounds Helped Carry The Farm Through Low Market Periods.

or Manitoba beef producer, Kevin Routledge, having calves that wean an extra 150 to 200 pounds in the fall is what has helped him carry on with his mixed-farming operation through some of the tightest beef markets over the past 30 years. During the lowest beef market prices post-BSE, he figures it was the steers that weaned as high as 750 pounds (more average in the 650 to 700 pound range), that made the difference of whether he would still be in the cattle business. “In years when a lot of farms didn’t make it, those extra pounds in the fall helped keep us going,” says Routledge, who along with his wife Cindy farm in Hamiota, an hour northwest of Brandon. Obviously, in better market years, those extra pounds helped the farm carry out improvements and expand. Born and raised on the family farm, Routledge today runs a herd of 200 commercial cow-calf pairs and harvests roughly 3,200 acres of grains and oilseeds. The beef herd which has expanded over the years, has long-relied on Simmental genetics to produce calves with higher weaning weights in the fall. Routledge has been raising Simmental cattle for more than 30 years. He says up until the early 1980s his father had been working with Hereford and Charolais cattle. They were productive, but he was looking for more milk production, growth and good mothering. In the mid 1980s Simmental bulls were introduced into the herd and the transition to Simmental influenced cattle began. By the mid 1990s Routledge was striving to produce red Simmental cattle with some Angus influence. That combination consistently produces a solid red calf, or red calf with a blaze on its face which usually draws top dollar. EARLIER CALVING Routledge favors a February/March calving season even though it can be hit with challenging winter weather. He states that it is the 90 to 100 pound calves born at that time of year, that go on to produce the higher September weaning weights.“It’s tempting to calve later with a higher chance of favorable weather, but again that would produce lighter calves for a September weaning,” says Routledge. “With the grain farm as well, we want calving to be done and behind us as we turn to field work in early May.” All cows and heifers calve close-in near the farm yard buildings, and are moved out onto stubble fields in April to afford them more space. Towards the end of April the breeding season begins. Replacement heifers are exposed to Angus bulls while the first and second calf heifers are exposed to lower-birth weight Simmental bulls. Simmental bulls also run with the main cow herd. As the herd has expanded over the years, Routledge has maxed out the pasture available at home. The main cow herd (roughly 130 to 140 head) remains at home for the summer, while the younger cattle, split into three groups, are hauled to separate rented pastures. The main cow herd follows a rotational grass-based grazing system. “The fields are a bit undersized for the herd we have today,” says Routledge. “It

was originally designed 15 years ago with 15 to 20 acre pastures when we ran about 40 head; now we are considerably larger. It just means we have to move the cow-calf pairs more often.” Cattle remain out on pasture until weaning in late September. “We sell the steers right off the cow through Heartland Livestock Sales at Virden,” says Routledge. “This year we had an average weaning weight of 680 pounds (range of 600 to 750).” All heifer calves are put on a backgrounding program through the early winter. Routledge has looked at different marketing scenarios, but figures that 680 to 700 pound fall calves produces the best return. “At one time we use to background our calves and sell them the next year at 950 weight,” he says. “When you consider your time and your feed costs, those higher weights really weren’t producing the return. At the same time the market often pays a bit more per pound for the lighter 500 pound calves, but that doesn’t really make up for the value of an extra 200 pounds that comes with those 700 pound calves.” GRAZING INTO WINTER After weaning, the cows and heifers will eventually head to swath grazing in late October for a few months. To bridge the gap between weaning and swath grazing, Routledge usually tries to stockpile forage on the home pasture to carry the herd for the month. If it’s been a drier growing and grazing season, he supplements with some hay until the herd moves onto swath grazing. Routledge did grow corn for winter grazing for several years, but that practice came under pressure from an unlikely pest. It wasn’t disease or insects, but black birds taking their toll on corn yields. “When we started

growing corn there were very few others in this area doing the same,” he says. “The black birds found our fields and at first we didn’t think they had much impact. In closer observation of the crop, many of the cobs were picked clean of any kernels.” About four years ago Kevin abandoned the idea of corn grazing and began seeding barley for swath grazing. In 2015, he seeded 45 acres of barley mixed with about one bushel per acre of fall rye. “We added the rye to provide some green growth in the field when the cows start swath grazing in late October or early November,” says Routledge. The cowherd will be on swath grazing until early January when they are switched to a higher protein hay-based ration a few weeks before calving. “The swath grazing is a nice way to feed them,” says Routledge. “Years ago we use to get earlier winter snowfalls and that was it — you had to start feeding. But in recent years winter hasn’t come quite as early so the cows are able to be out on pasture longer and feed on the swaths. It takes about 15 minutes to move the fence to a give cows access to a fresh area of swaths and you’re done.” He says one drawback on his farm is the lack of shelter on the swathed field so cattle still need to have access to be in around buildings and windbreaks in the yard. “On a nice day, even if it is cold and there’s no wind, they will be out there all day,” he says. “But if we get a cold cutting wind they’ll spend more of their day around the buildings.” The heifer calves are backgrounded with hay and grain over the early part of winter. Routledge will assess the 100 head closely to select the 20 to 25 which be kept as replacements, with the remainder marketed in late January or February. MODERATE SIZED CATTLE He says the Simmental genetics have worked well with his farming operation. “I like the fact that compared to the earlier days, the breed has produced a more moderate sized animal,” says Routledge . “There use to be those 1,900 to 2,000 pound cows and they were too big. There still might be the odd 1,700 to 1,800 pound animal left on the place, but for the most part we are targeting a more moderate 1,500-pound animal. You have to select the bull accordingly for the age of animal, but those cows have no trouble delivering 90 to 100 pound — occasionally 100 plus — calves.” Kevin states that they select for good temperament, good milk production and good mothering ability. Occasionally he has bought a few purebred replacement cows and heifers just to introduce new genetics and enhance the maternal characteristics in his beef herd, which carries about an 80 per cent Simmental influence. Routledge says with a limit on available pasture he has no plans to increase cow numbers. “We’ve increased the herd size over the years to get to the place where we want to be,” he says. “We are limited to the amount of pasture, and really we are at a size that is manageable with the labor we have available. For the time being we are just looking for ways to improve production efficiency with what we have.”

appy New Year and Welcome to the January 2016 edition of Commercial Country! For those of you who may be receiving our publication for the first time, we know that you will find this issue of our publication both interesting and informative. Beef producers at all levels of production continue to tell us that Commercial Country is one of the publications they look forward to the most, as well as one that stays as a reference item throughout the entire year. Within the pages of this magazine you will find the leading Canadian Simmental breeders and also see some of the best cattle available anywhere in the world. Anyone actively involved in the beef industry realizes that the fall of 2015 was an interesting one where many cattlemen received record prices for their calves, while others may have been somewhat disappointed if they sold in a week where the prices slid from the week before. I was questioned by a reporter about the larger than usual price fluctuation and I offered that the ups and downs of the fall calf market were nothing new, and that perhaps the drop wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t quite as large if you looked at it in a percentage basis perspective; keeping in mind that most weight ranges were still enjoying a doubling in price per pound from 5 years ago. One thing that was very clear throughout the fall run was that once again there were premiums to be gained for quality and looking after details. Uniform groups of calves from reputation producers who properly castrate and dehorn were rewarded and extra weight translated into

extra dollars per cow in all regions of the country. Crossbred calves brought premiums for producers and quality Simmental influenced were consistently at the top of the list. At the time of writing this, we are just starting the first bred commercial female sales and while we have witnessed some very good prices we have also seen excellent opportunity for those who want to add females to their herds, sometimes at lower prices than we may have expected. There are always forces outside the beef industry that affect the pricing of our product and the economic slowdown in the energy sector has undoubtedly been a contributor to putting the cap on the bred cow and heifer market; however quality and attention to details again brought rewards and as with the calf market we saw Simmental influenced females bringing a premium. As we have witnessed in every part of the country this past fall quality is rewarded in all aspects of beef production and it has never been more important to have pounds of calf to sell than it is now. Practical Tips on Scours Prevention and Colostrum Management by Roy Lewis DVM

few changes regarding scours prevention or colostrum management can make a huge difference in preventing the first case of scours or other infectious diseases on your operation come spring. Hopefully this article may offer a few helpful hints regarding prevention of the first infectious case, which can quickly spread to others. This is becoming ever so critical as herds become larger and labor is scarce. By increasing biosecurity around the farm, bumping up the immune status and bolstering colostrum uptake where necessary, a lot of these disease processes can at least be minimized. If there is an outbreak one must have a plan then to minimize its spread within the herd otherwise, before we know it an outbreak has occurred. We all know how critical colostrum uptake is in the first six hours of life and that the quality must be there as well. Good nutrition and proper vaccination of the cow herd helps boost colostral immunity. If in doubt, especially with your heifers, colostral immunity can be checked by a colostrometer, or a brix refractometer that essentially measures the predicted immunoglobulin levels in the colostrum. It is accepted that in order to maintain biosecurity it is best to not use dairy colostrum as diseases such as Johneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s disease, can be brought onto your premises by the colostrum. It is best to save and freeze some colostrum from a good milking cow on your farm or have several bags of the good quality colostrum products (such as headstart) that are on the market on hand. These products are manufactured in such a way that infectious disease transmission should be stopped or at least greatly minimized. However, cleanliness when giving it is imperative so I always insist producers start with a new esophageal feeder every spring and use it on newborn calves. Use a different one if drenching sick calves (label each accordingly) disinfect at least the tube in-between uses and wash all your equipment as often as you can. Watch slow calves, harder pulls, backward calves and premature calves for signs that they have nursed. At my home farm the rule is if any cow is assisted and in the calving chute the cow is milked and the calf is given at least some colostrum to get if off to a good start. It is surprising when milking cows we find blocked teats plugged teats or just poor milkers and these can be identified quickly and culled. Udder conformation should be closely watched when selecting heifers and any cows with low-slung bags or larger teats, it is best to supplement their calf and possibly adopt to another cow if the

opportunity arises. With the â&#x20AC;&#x153;wildâ&#x20AC;? cow, their calves are always at risk of inadequate colostral uptake. If there is any doubt at all that a calf is slow at nursing tattoo ink is put above his nose so we can at least see if he is attempting to nurse. With recent work at University of Calgary Veterinary Medicine by Dr. Elizabeth Homerosky, checking the suckle reflex is a great indication if a calf will suck. If a non-existent or weak suckle reflex is evident when checked 20 minutes after being born, colostrum should be administered. One liter to 1.5 liters is what we strive for. We all love to hear the sound of a calf slurping milk but in busy operations or calves born at pasture that is not always possible. There is no harm in even supplementing a calf with a bag of a colostrum substitute if you believe colostrum uptake has been somewhat deficient. The time to make that decision is in the first few hours of life. If there is any doubt of colostrum uptake, a blood test can be taken and checked by your veterinarian and the total protein checked. I use the scale of above 6 is adequate, 5 to 6 is borderline and below 5 there has been inadequate colostral uptake. This is not an absolute guarantee that the calf will get sick but I would isolate until one knows for sure. Many studies have been done over the years and inadequate colostral uptake leads to increased respiratory disease in the feedlot, so this critical process essentially affects the calf for the rest of its life. If in doubt have the colostrum checked if your veterinarian has a refractometer or colostrometer and when in doubt have the blood checked if there is some doubt whether colostrum was received. Protection from many diseases comes initially through the colostrum, so recognizing the need of when to supplement can reap huge benefits if we can prevent the first scours case from developing. Organisms that gain access when immune systems are not functioning properly such as the protozoal diseases (coccidiosis or cryptosporidiosis) may not manifest themselves in calves with adequate colostral uptake. If scours, coccidiosis or cryptosporidiosis do occur those calves with inadequate colostral uptake will be the first to get sick and spread it to the others. Prevention of disease is paramount in the calving period and extra effort put into colostral uptake will give huge returns in the form of less sickness, treatment costs and death down the line. There is also a huge labor saving in not having to treat sick calves. At calving time extra time is very welcomed. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure!

Pour ceux d’entre vous qui reçoivent notre revue pour la première fois, nous sommes convaincus que vous trouverez le contenu intéressant et informatif. Des producteurs bovins impliqués à différents paliers de la production apprécient la publication Commercial Country et nous disent qu’ils la trouvent l’une des plus intéressantes et qu’ils la conservent en référence toute l’année. En feuilletant cette revue, vous pourrez faire connaissance avec plusieurs des éleveurs d’élite du Canada, tout en appréciant certains des meilleurs bovins disponibles dans le monde. Quiconque impliqué activement en production bovine aura sûrement constaté que l’automne 2015 s’est avéré l’une des meilleures périodes pour ceux ayant vendu leurs veaux à des prix records, tandis que d’autres auront été moins chanceux en ayant vendu dans une semaine où le prix du marché était en baisse. J’ai été interviewé par un journaliste qui me demandait pourquoi les prix avaient connu autant de variation. Je lui ai répondu que les hauts et les bas du marché n’étaient pas un nouveau phénomène, et que la baisse de prix n’était pas si importante lorsqu’on la transposait en termes de pourcentage. Il faut tout de même tenir compte du fait que la plupart des prix obtenus selon les diverses catégories de poids représentait environ le double du prix reçu il y a cinq ans. Encore une fois, en analysant l’évolution des ventes de veaux au cours de l’automne, on constatait que des primes étaient versées pour les veaux de qualité et qu’il fallait accorder beaucoup d’importance à tous les détails. Les groupes de veaux uniformes, correctement castrés et décornés, et provenant de producteurs renommés, ont reçu des primes

et les lots de veaux plus pesants ont permis d’obtenir plus d’argent par vache un peu partout au Canada. Les producteurs ont reçu des primes pour leurs veaux croisés, avec les veaux d’influence Simmental obtenant régulièrement les plus hauts prix. Au moment où j’écrivais cet article, les premières ventes de femelles commerciales avaient eu lieu et, bien qu’on observait alors de très bons prix payés, il y avait également de très bonnes affaires à faire pour ceux voulant ajouter quelques femelles à leur troupeau, à des prix souvent moins élevés que prévus. Des facteurs externes à l’industrie bovine viennent souvent influencer le prix de nos produits, comme par exemple la baisse du prix du pétrole qui a sûrement été un élément majeur ayant freiné le marché des vaches et des taures gestantes. Toutefois, la qualité et le souci du détail ont également été payant dans ces ventes de femelles, avec des primes intéressantes payées pour des femelles croisées Simmental. Tel que nous l’avons constaté un peu partout au Canada lors de l’automne 2015, la qualité était payante dans toutes les catégories de produits vendus, faisant en sorte qu’il était encore plus important que jamais d’avoir plus de livres de veaux à vendre. Le recours aux croisements représente toujours la meilleure façon d’ajouter du poids de veau et, pour se faire, la race Simmental n’a pas son pareil afin d’accroître la rentabilité des producteurs bovins. La valeur de l’hétérose, ça vaut la peine et il ne faut pas la perdre

vec la volatilité et les changements fréquents de la valeur au marché des veaux et des coûts de production dans le secteur vache-veau, plusieurs producteurs se demandent bien quelle est la valeur de l’hétérose (vigueur hybride) par rapport à la situation actuelle de prix dans l’industrie bovine. Plusieurs producteurs sont aussi à la recherche de moyens d’améliorer l’efficacité et la rentabilité de leur production. La rentabilité peut être améliorée par une augmentation du volume produit (c’est-à-dire les livres de veau vendues) et / ou de la valeur des produits vendus (en améliorant la qualité). La diminution des coûts de production, et par conséquent du prix d’équilibre, peut également permettre d’améliorer la rentabilité. Mieux encore, en améliorant le ratio produits / coûts, on améliore nos profits. Au niveau des producteurs bovins commerciaux, le recours à des technologies et des systèmes d’élevage qui augmentent la quantité et la qualité des produits, et qui réduisent les coûts de production, demeure un élément clé si on veut assurer la compétitivité de l’entreprise. Certains producteurs pensent davantage suivre un programme d’élevage plus conventionnel, afin d’améliorer les caractéristiques des produits (veaux), toutefois ils veulent comprendre ce qu’ils laissent de côté en ne profitant pas de l’hétérose. Par ailleurs, d’autres producteurs planifient en détail leur système de croisement afin d’aller chercher la vigueur hybride maximale. D’une manière ou l’autre, s’ils veulent prendre une décision judicieuse, les producteurs doivent être conscients de la valeur pouvant être générée dans leur troupeau par l’hétérose ou la vigueur hybride. Pour bien comprendre ce qu’on peut gagner en plus, il faut surtout bien connaître ce qu’on vend et comment on le vend. Il peut être tentant d’obtenir des primes selon la qualité des carcasses produites, si on en juge par la promotion effectuée et qui en fait peut s’avérer être une pratique rentable. Il ne fait aucun doute qu’on doit rencontrer les besoins des consommateurs et qu’il demeure important de produire des produits de haute qualité. Ceci étant dit, si vous êtes un producteur vendant vos veaux au sevrage, vous ne tirez pas réellement profit de vos efforts de sélection envers un produit de qualité, tout en risquant d’encaisser des pertes de performance et une diminution de l’hétérose. Cela est également vrai si vous possédez les bovins finis qui seront vendus sur une grille, car vous ne recevrez

qu’une fraction de la valeur d’amélioration, encore faudrat-il qu’elle soit plus importante que la prime sur le veau. À l’opposé, l’hétérose apporte une valeur ajoutée sur chacune de vos vaches, et il s’agit d’une valeur que vous pouvez obtenir à chaque année peu importe de quelle manière vous vendez vos veaux. Encore plus important, ce n’est pas 20 $, 40 $ ou 60 $ par tête de plus que vous recevrez en vendant vos veaux ou bouvillons…la prime générée par l’hétérose est beaucoup, beaucoup plus élevée. La pratique des croisements apporte deux principaux avantages comparativement à l’emploi d’une seule race. Premièrement, les bovins croisés présentent de l’hétérose ou de la vigueur hybride. De plus, les animaux croisés possèdent les qualités combinées des races parentales. On utilise souvent le terme « complémentarité des races » pour décrire les combinaisons de races qui produiront une progéniture supérieure pour un ensemble de caractères. À l’aide de valeurs d’EPD inter-races et de facteurs d’ajustement, on peut viser une sélection afin d’améliorer un ensemble de caractères, incluant les caractères liés aux carcasses, tout en cherchant à produire des vaches qui s’adapteront bien à leur environnement et qui exprimeront le potentiel engendré par leur niveau d’hétérose. Dans la production vache-veau, les améliorations produites par les effets de l’hétérose sont reliées à la fois au fait d’avoir des vaches croisées et également des veaux croisés. Vous trouvez dans les deux tableaux ci-après les valeurs observées d’hétérose individuelle (en raison du veau croisé) et maternelle (avec la vache croisée), pour plusieurs caractères d’importance économique. Ces valeurs estimées d’hétérose sont adaptées d’un rapport de recherche de Cundiff et Gregory, en 1999, et elles constituent le reflet des principales expériences touchant les croisements de races ayant été réalisées dans le sud-ouest et le centre-ouest des États-Unis. Les progrès les plus importants par l’hétérose sont obtenus chez les caractères avec un niveau plus faible d’héritabilité. Par exemple, des caractères tels que la reproduction et la longévité possèdent une faible héritabilité, mais ils représentent des caractères essentiels en production vache-veau. Pour ces mêmes caractères, la réponse à la sélection est très lente, toutefois l’hétérose générée par la pratique du croisement permet d’améliorer significativement les performances d’un animal. Pour les producteurs commerciaux,

le fait d’avoir des vaches croisées contribue pour environ 66 % de l’avantage économique obtenu (voir le Tableau 2). Il a été clairement démontré que le croisement constitue une méthode efficace pour améliorer l’efficacité reproductive et la productivité chez les bovins de boucherie. Understand Its Worth Before You Give it Away…The Value of Heterosis By Bob Weaber, Ph.D., Cow-calf Extension Specialist/Associate Professor, Department of Animal Science and Industry, Kansas State University, Manhattan, Kansas

he dramatic changes and volatility cow-calf production system input costs and calf values have many producers wondering about the value of heterosis in today’s beef industry pricing structure. Many producers are seeking ways to improve cowcalf production efficiency and profitability. Profitability may be enhanced by increasing the volume of production (i.e. the pounds of calves you market) and/or the value of products you sell (improving quality). The reduction of production costs, and thus breakeven prices, can also improve profitability. Better yet, improving the input:output ratio should enhance profit. For commercial beef producers, the implementation of technologies and breeding systems that increase the quality and volume of production and reduce input costs is essential to maintain or improve the competitive position of the operation. Some producers are thinking of establishing a more conventional straight breeding system to improve end-product value traits and want to understand the value they are giving up as they sacrifice heterosis, while other producers are considering the establishment of a planned crossbreeding system to capture the value of hybrid vigor. Either way, to make an informed decision, producers need to know the value generated in their herd by heterosis or hybrid vigor. To fully understand the trade-offs, it is essential to know what it is you sell and how you sell it. The lure of premiums for high quality beef carcasses is appealing; it gets lots of trade publication promotion and it can be profitable. No doubt growing the top-line of the beef value chain and satisfying customers is important. That said, if you are producer that sells calves at weaning you have very limited opportunity to capture the value of selection pressure you place on end-product quality at the expense of other traits or loss in heterosis. It is also true that even if you own the cattle to harvest and are paid on a grid, you only get a fraction of the value of the improvement, albeit bigger than the calf premium. Conversely, the value of heterosis affects every cow on your outfit and it is value that you can capture every year no matter how you sell calves. More importantly, it’s not a $20 or $40 or $60 premium per head you might get for selling calves or carcasses…the heterosis premium is much, much more. The use of crossbreeding offers two distinct and important advantages over the use of a single breed. First, crossbred animals have heterosis or hybrid vigor. Second, crossbred animals combine the strengths of the parent breeds. The term ‘breed complementarity’ is often used to describe breed combinations that produce highly desirable progeny for a broad range of traits. With useful across breed EPDs and adjustment factors, we can effectively select for improvement in a wide range of traits including carcass traits, while seeking to build environmentally adapted cows that leverage the power and value of heterosis. Improvements in cow-calf production due to heterosis are attributable to having both a crossbred cow and a crossbred calf. The two tables below detail the individual (crossbred calf) and maternal (crossbred cow) heterosis observed for various important production traits. These heterosis estimates are adapted from a report by Cundiff and Gregory, 1999, and summarize crossbreeding experiments conducted in the South-

eastern and Mid-west areas of the US. Heterosis generates the largest improvement in lowly heritable traits. Traits such as reproduction and longevity, essential for cow-calf profitability, have low heritability. These traits respond very slowly to selection but heterosis generated through crossbreeding can significantly improve an animal’s performance. The largest economic benefit (roughly 66%) of crossbreeding to commercial producers comes from having crossbred cows (Table 2.) Crossbreeding has been shown to be an efficient method to improve reproductive efficiency and productivity in beef cattle. A variety of crossbreeding systems yield 20-30% improvements in weaning weight per cow exposed not including the additional value generated through sire selection within breed. This represents a substantial change in output given relatively constant input. Simple examples of a 23% increase in weaning weight per cow exposed using a terminal sire/ F1 (two cross) cow can generate $250-300 additional revenue per cow per year. I’m not aware of any set of calves that have generated carcass premiums of $250 premium per cow exposed regardless of breed or grid. In today’s calf prices the value of heterosis for a herd of 100 cows is $25,000 to $30,000 per year and represents a decrease in breakeven costs of more than $40/cwt on 600 lb calves. A well-constructed crossbreeding system can have positive effects on a ranch’s bottom line by not only increasing the quality and gross pay weight of calves produced but also by increasing the durability and productivity of the cow factory. As you make your decision to straightbreed or cross-breed make sure you don’t give away a couple hundred dollars per cow to make a $20-60 premium per calf sold at market or on the rail when you can go for both! Canadian Beef Breeds Council Report I would like to recognize the efforts of the exhibitors, volunteers, sponsors, staff and guests in making the 2015 show season an incredible success. The combined efforts at countless shows across Canada demonstrates why we are recognized for our world class genetics. By all accounts, cattle entries were up over last year, there were more international visitors than there have been in several years, and the cattle looked terrific. As we look forward to 2016 and we begin strategizing for next year, I encourage you to look at adopting new technologies into your operation. This may be a new farm management software program, an updated piece of machinery, or look at incorporating new science based genetic selection methods. The cattle market has seen several of its best years in decades as of late and now is a good time to invest in moving your farm operation into the future. In an increasing globally competitive landscape such as the beef cattle industry, it is important to be efficient and utilize all available technologies. If you wait to see how it works out for your neighbour or someone from another breed, it may be to late. As a high cost producer, we can compete, but we will have the greatest chance of success by utilizing and embracing the tools available to us in Canada. The inaugural Canadian Beef Industry Conference (CBIC) will be held in Calgary from August 9-12, 2016. This event is geared toward producers as there will be sessions that are directly relevant to your farm operations. It will also be an opportunity to become engaged with industry organizations and network with other breeders, commercial cattlemen, international guests, researchers and government officials. Consider this your invitation to attend and I look forward to seeing you there. The CBBC will continue to work on behalf of purebred producers to develop markets for Canadian genetics. Congratulations to Raymond Land & Cattle! Dave and Crystal Raymond own and operate Raymond Land & Cattle Ltd located 10 miles south of Aneroid, Sk along with their 3 young children Tristen, Brooke & Owen and Dave’s parents Alan and Elva Raymond. The operation is a 6th generation family farm that began in 1907. With a long history of raising livestock, Dave’s grandfather made his mark in the industry in the 60’s with Horned Herefords. Today the operation has grown to 20, 500 acres; 7000 acres is farmed for cash crops and feed while the remaining land base is grown for hay and houses nearly 900 breeding cows and 350 open replacements. Alan and Dave began raising and selling commercial bred heifers in 1995. They were not afraid to cross breed using continental cattle in an area of predominately British origin. They quickly discovered cross breeding improved productivity in the calves they were weaning off of a largely Hereford based cowherd. Hybrid Bulls consisting of 3/8 Simmental and 5/8 Red Angus were purchased in an attempt to acquire all of the desired characteristics that each breed could contribute to the calf crop. Dave knew his cow herd well from a young age and it didn’t take him long to realize the inconsistency the hybrid bulls were creating.

In 2006 Dave married Crystal Blake of Wood River Charolais at McCord, Sk. Together, they strategized over the perfect cowherd, and while they both believe they are still not quite there, they have progressed considerably. In 2005 they started seeking easy keeping registered purebred Simmental bulls to use on their commercial cows with now a largely Red Angus base. Currently they are backgrounding 875 calves that need to prove themselves as both breeding females for their annual Bred Heifer Sale that takes place the first week of December and as finished steers. Calving of the Cowherd takes place in late March and early April on open pasture. These cows have little to no problem calving out on their own. Cow calf pairs are then grazed on summer pastures and are weaned in late October then backgrounded to the following March. This March a handful of these steers were taken to finish due to their impressive size and rate of gain. Production is not the single most important trait they are looking for though. With females raised to be sold as bred heifers, it’s equally important to have easy keeping females with fantastic udders, good feet, and the eye appeal to boot. Dave and Crystal have been taking bred heifers to Agribition since 2009. In 2014 they took home the banner for the Champion Pen of 5 Commercial Bred Heifers and sold that group for $3550 a piece. They couldn’t have been happier with the success that they have had the last few years.
